Electric scooters are igniting new laws, legal responsibility issues and even “scooter rage”

The 15-mile-per-hour cars are regularly pushed on sidewalks, leading to injuries to pedestrians and even other e-scooters. Auto insurance rules generally exclude legal responsibility insurance for cars with fewer than four wheels. Safety requirements for rentable scooters are based on an honor system. Visit a chief city like Washington, D.C., and you will quickly discover there is a brand new way to get around town – the electric scooter or e-scooter. Ironically, you could have difficulty learn about those 15-mile-per-hour cars, given they may be increasingly more involved in close calls with pedestrians, strollers, and vehicles.

Scofflaws

The idea of human beings navigating overcrowded towns without riding fossil gas-burning vehicles appeals to the environmentally conscious. The vehicles also entice people pressed for time because an e-scooter can travel four times quicker than a pedestrian. Services like Lime use a clean fee service that is just like Citi Bike leases.

So, what’s not to like? To start with, no longer all riders obey the regulations. E-scooter customers are alleged to be at least 18 years old, have a driver’s license, ride by themselves, and wear a helmet. But in truth, many riders, including dad and mom with kids, are “ride-sharing” the cars’ narrow strolling board. And youngsters sometimes use them as changed skateboards, leaping them over curbs, ignoring helmet legal guidelines, and getting into injuries.

Liability issues

Another problem for riders is liability in case of an accident by fate. Not all towns have equal insurance standards for e-scooter organizations, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners points out.
